Jane Austen (1775–1817) was born on December 16, 1775, in the village of Steventon, Hampshire, England. She was the seventh of eight children in a lively, literary-minded family. From a young age, she showed a keen eye for character and a quiet sense of humor that would shape her legacy as one of England's most beloved novelists.
Her major works—
Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and
Persuasion—were published between 1811 and 1818. Though they appeared anonymously during her lifetime, they quickly earned praise for their wit, intelligence, and subtle critiques of social class and gender roles.
Austen's heroines are thoughtful, independent, and refreshingly human, and her novels continue to resonate with readers for their emotional depth and sparkling dialogue. She never married and lived much of her life in a close family circle, but her stories reveal a profound understanding of relationships and society.
Jane Austen died on July 18, 1817, at the age of 41. More than two centuries later, her work remains a cornerstone of English literature, admired for its elegance, insight, and timeless charm.
